Beware of The Scribes

"And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” -Luke 20:45-47 (ESV)

Now I know this is wasn’t what the scribes looked like. And I know it technically better Illustrates the Pharisees than the scribes (Pharisees were higher up than the scribes) BUT look at that attitude 👀. And I love that it has chains with him. The I’m better than you and you need to know it attitude.

You can know the Bible upside and down and still be a heathen at heart. It’s not about what you know- it’s about WHO you know.

They didn’t know Jesus. They only knew of him and that is definitely NOT the same thing.

Shake It Off and Move On

“And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”
-Mark 6:7-11 (ESV)

There’s a lot going on in this little passage! First, He sent His disciples out 2x2. A buddy system. He didn’t send them out to strange places by themselves. Some of the hardest things are easier to just because you have someone with you. He also GAVE them authority over unclean spirits. That’s a pretty big deal- possibly the hardest thing they would ever come across would be an evil spirit and He gave them ruling over it! But He didn’t charge them with changing the hearts of people- only Jesus can do that. He gave them a spiritual authority over evil spirits but yet people will always have free will and that’s something we don’t have authority over. You can’t change stubborn minds or hardened hearts.

Jesus also instructed them not to take ANYTHING with them expect a staff. No food, no money, not even a change of clothes. Along their travels, they would be at the mercy of other people for food, shelter, bathing and other daily needs. By inviting people in, it would give the disciples a chance for fellowship and evangelism. In general most people would- it was more common back then but there were some people who gave them an absolute N O.

He told them to not worry about those folk. Anybody who can’t allow a person traveling long distance for even a drink of water had some serious spiritual issues. Just plain rude! He told them to shake their dusty and nasty feet off in their house as a testament and MOVE ON. I bet that made the dwellers real happy 😆

The point: don’t dwell on what you can’t change. Especially people. People are people. Some people don’t want to be changed. They don’t think they need change. Don’t dwell on these things. SHAKE IT OFF. MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE. Don’t waste time on them when there are PLENTY of other people who are willing to listen 🙌🏻

Dwell in Peace Undivided

"Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come." -Matthew 12:22-32 (ESV)

Spiritual speaking, a person cannot live under two masters. He cannot be half slave and half free- that wouldn’t make him free at all. He would still be a slave. God doesn’t want us to be even a little bit enslaved to the cares of this world and the wiles of the devil... He offers us complete freedom IF we offer Him complete surrender.

What if you had a friend that thought the entire universe, the whole cosmos, was nothing more than like those splatters on this page? What if they’ve been led to believe that because A LOT of people believe the same thing? Wouldn’t you want to take that friend aside and show them what it really is (to the best of your ability)? To show them the purpose of it, what it looks like, what it acts life, and the absolutely glorious beauty of it. To show them how richer their single life could because of this?

Why would you do this? Because they’re your friend and they should know about this seemingly small but very important part of life. And then, they could tell others and change their lives as well.
.
The same is true with our faith. There are countless people that have no idea what it means to have a loving and redeeming and graciously thankful relationship with our Creator. It is so much more than speckles....
